Michigan Court of Appeals Information
The Michigan Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court hearing appeal by right and appeal by leave cases from circuit courts and lower courts, along with some original cases. Starting with 9 judges, the Michigan appellate court has expanded to 24 judges, who sit statewide and are elected from one of the Court of Appeals Districts.
The Michigan Court of Appeals has four districts and three courtrooms; District I in Detroit, District II in Troy (which does not have a courtroom), District III in Grand Rapids, and District IV in Lansing. The three courtrooms hold hearings year-round, with a panel of three randomly selected judges assigned to various panels. If two of three judges on a panel agree on an appellate case decision, it is binding. Michigan Court of Appeals decisions may be appealed by application for leave to the Michigan Supreme Court.
