Most of these narcotics mimic the chemical construction or effects of Schedule 1 or 2 substances, and as such can lead to the most serious possible possession with intent penalties. For Schedule 1 and 2 substances and analogues, the specific maximum sentence a person can face depends on the amount of the drug allegedly possessed. If a person possesses less than 50 grams of a designer narcotic, he or she can face up to 20 years imprisonment and a $25,000 fine. In cases involving amounts between 50 and 450 grams, that fine can increase to $250,000. For cases involving amounts between 450 grams and 1 kilogram, the jail sentence can increase to 30 years, and a fine of $500,000 may result. For any amount over 1 kilogram, up to life in prison and a one million dollar fine can be given as part of the sentence. For designer drugs listed in other schedules, the penalties are still exceptionally serious, and any Detroit possession with intent conviction will lead to a felony record.
