There are two distinct statutes dealing with armed robbery and theft in Detroit, both of which can combine to create one single, incredibly harsh, and potentially life-altering sentence. Under Section 750.529, anyone who engages in a robbery or theft related offense while in possession of a dangerous weapon, or while in possession of an article used or fashioned in a manner to lead anyone person present to reasonably believe that article is a dangerous weapon is guilty of a felony. There is no maximum punishment under this law, and offenders can be sentenced to up to life behind bars or any other number of years. If during the commission of an armed robbery or theft, aggravated assault or serious injury occurs, the offender will be sentenced to a minimum of 2 years in prison.
The second possibly related statute is Section 750.530, which involves larceny involving force and/or violence. If anyone commits a larceny of money or other property (theft of money or property) and while during the commission of that offense uses force or violence or fear against anyone present, can be convicted of a felony. Conviction can lead to up to 15 years behind bars.
